When you’re taking time to update your resume for a new job opportunity, it’s a smart move to set up or update your LinkedIn profile at the same time. For many professionals, having a presence on LinkedIn used to be a smart way to maintain a strong professional network. This is still the case, but employers claim that if they have narrowed down the candidates, a strong LinkedIn profile can simplify the decision for them. Taking time to optimize your LinkedIn profile shows future employers you are engaged, connected, and serious about getting hired.
Additionally, one of the best LinkedIn profile tips Angela shared is that this is an amazing opportunity to “recast your experience”. It’s a perfect opportunity to showcase what you do really well using terms that speak the same language a future employer would use.

If you’re feeling hesitant about having to keep up with yet another social media platform, you can take a deep breath. LinkedIn is not something you have to invest a lot of time in or keep up with regularly. Here are some simple LinkedIn profile tips to pay attention to!
If you don’t already have a lot of connections, start with just adding friends and family members. LinkedIn will suggest connections for you based on who you know and what your interests and skills are. There’s even an option to add people based on your email contacts.
When you make new connections with people who are in careers you’re considering, your feed will be a great source of information. It allows you to have a pulse on what’s going on in a specific field and what opportunities are available.
The LinkedIn Profile Tips You Need to Zero In On
The great news for anyone who doesn’t have a Linkedin profile yet is that you can set up a profile in less than an hour. When you’re writing anything on your profile, it’s all about the keywords.
Find job descriptions for your ideal career and use that language to frame your experience. Make sure you have a headline, a complete about section, and a good list of skills and endorsements. Don’t forget to upload a headshot as well as a banner image. If you need a template, you can even grab this one!
LinkedIn is a place for making connections, so be open to them. Like Jeff mentioned in Episode 36, when you make a connection, send a short message to introduce yourself and share something you have in common. When you’ve done the work of setting up your profile, don’t be surprised if you get noticed and employers reach out to you!

Angela shared some great tips for anyone who might be still thinking about making a transition. For one, get in the habit of keeping a running list of “wins”, awards, or accomplishments. Even if these are directly related to the classroom environment, there are ways to translate that experience into corporate language.
It’s not uncommon for employers to reach out to you if they see that your experience is a good match for a role. If you’ve done the work of keeping your highlights section updated, you’ll never be unprepared if someone wants to connect.
