The Show Notes:
How to Earn More & Still Make an Impact with a Copywriting Business
Did you fall in love with teaching because you love knowing you’re making a difference every day? In this episode, Brittany Long of Life After Teaching is sharing how she earns more than she did teaching while using her writing skills to make an impact!
Learn what a day in the life looks like for Brittany, why she finds her work so fulfilling, and why failing forward was a necessary part of her success!
Why You Have to Be Willing to Fail First
When you meet someone like Brittany who has found her niche, you might assume she just got lucky. But the truth is there was a lot of failing forward that went into all of Brittany’s success. She has tried on so many different businesses that include physical products to services. Though it’s not always glamorous, finding out what isn’t a good fit is sometimes just as important as figuring out what is a good fit and allows you to make an impact in the lives of others!
Part of why teachers make such great entrepreneurs is that they naturally enjoy learning and adopt a growth mindset. As Suzanne Klein mentioned in episode 48, an ability to adapt and change is one of the seven traits of a successful entrepreneur.
Brittany had a powerful encouragement that if you’re feeling discouraged in your transition, try to muster all the courage to push through. You are so much closer to your success than you think!
It’s Worth it to Be Picky When You Want to Make an Impact
The sweet spot that Brittany landed in was in using her writing skills as an email marketer and ghostwriter. In a nutshell, Brittany studies her clients and their business in-depth so that she can write effective email marketing campaigns that help her clients sell their products and services. While sales can feel a bit uncomfortable for a former teacher, Brittany made an important distinction.
She only works with clients who have high integrity and want to make a difference in the world. Email marketing is just one way her clients can impact the lives of those in their audience. So yes, ghost-writing for Brittany does involve a transaction, but it also often leads to a transformation.
Taking Those Next Steps
If Brittany’s work sounds appealing to you, then there are some ways you can start filling the skill gap right now. For one, take a look at the emails that are in your inbox right now from different businesses. Study the structure and consider things like what made you open the email and keep reading. You could even watch a video from an influencer you follow and practice writing an email using their tone and style.
Additionally, map out your sales journey with a client from beginning to end. Make sure you know how you will network, set up a discovery call, send a proposal, collect the payment, and stay organized with clients. Many times, like Dee-Anna also mentioned in episode 47, getting that first client is all you need to get the ball rolling.
