You will be so encouraged to know how many different ways there are to use all the skills from your teaching experience in a different setting. These roles could empower you to leave work at work and still allow you to have a connection to the world of education.
Jobs in Higher Education
You might have assumed that you couldn’t work in higher education because you don’t have a master’s degree. Many people think the only career change they could make into higher education are for professors or adjunct positions. But if you love the world of learning and academics, there are many roles and opportunities available to you in this setting.
Administrative Roles
These include positions in Human Resources that include tasks like hiring, training, accounting, or even ensuring that people are treated fairly.
Faculty
These are the traditional teaching positions you are probably already familiar with. Faculty work directly with students to deliver the courses students enroll in.
Diversity and Multicultural Affairs
In this job, you are responsible for making sure all students are treated fairly in every experience they have on campus. Other job titles for this role may also include program coordinator or diversity officer.
Adult Education
Every college or university has an adult education department. Students who are enrolling in school later in life or who are returning to finish their degree have unique needs and challenges. If you made this career change, you would be responsible for directly supporting these students so that they have a successful experience on campus.
Distance Education Programs
Now more than ever, higher education is focusing on remote education options. Satellite campuses need people who are passionate about accommodating the needs and circumstances of those who use this learning format.
In this role, you would be responsible for coordinating and creating learning resources. You might also be an online instructor or ensure all the tech is optimized for students to have a great learning experience.
Extension and Outreach Programs
Individuals in this department work with organizations in their local community such as camp coordinators or education coordinators.
Faculty Development
If you have loved supporting or training other teachers in the past, this might be a great career change for you. Here your work would focus on helping professors find ways to teach more effectively.
Career Development
All students need a bridge to connect their learning to real career opportunities upon graduation. This role helps students transition successfully into their field of study through opportunities like internships. Individuals in these positions serve as liaisons between students and job opportunities.
Working for a School Organization
Staff Development
Do you enjoy training other teachers? In this role, you can help teachers learn to use new tools and strategies so they can uplevel their skill set and connect with their students in new ways.
Curriculum Specialists
This role might be a career change you’ve already considered. If you enjoy developing lesson plans, mapping out objectives, and choosing the best resources to implement, you would be a great fit for this job. Curriculum specialists are often responsible for making decisions of which curriculum to select or purchase.
Technology Specialist
If you are already the go-to for all problems tech-related, this role might come very easy to you. This job involves training teachers on how to integrate online resources into instruction.
Instructional Coach
People in these roles demonstrate lessons and train teachers to teach effectively. If you have great communication skills and enjoy teaching in both large groups and one-on-one, you might enjoy this position.
Jobs in Community Organizations
A role like this usually involves working in places like your local library, museum, or recreation department. These jobs can be a great match for former teachers but are currently under stricter hiring budgets due to the pandemic.
Non-Traditional Teaching Roles
Perhaps you do love teaching but you just need less demand, less prep, and less grading. There are many ways you can still teach one specific curriculum area – either online or in person. You may have heard of companies like VIPKID who do this.
If you have always wanted to create your own course, you could also create a course and submit it to Outschool. When people take your course, you get paid!
Working for Yourself
Working for yourself can be a very appealing career change. You might think it would be very expensive and complicated to start your own company, but that’s not the case. All you need is a skill and a computer.
